Harviglass has recently been awarded a major contract to design, manufacture and install a unique, modular GRP roof design on dozens of flat roof buildings at national utility sites throughout the country. The system recognises Harviglass’ ability to provide a long-term solution for flat roofed buildings. These buildings constructed from the 1950’s to 1970’s have typically concrete slab roofs. Indeed any flat roof that has degraded to the point where serious rain penetration is occurring may benefit from the concept.
The buildings being refurbished are typically of brick, block or cast concrete construction and vary in length from 4.0 to 12.0 metres, and in width and height from 3.5 to 4.0 metres. The GRP modules are designed to adapt to these variations and to various configurations of flat roof construction and drainage. Harviglass’ specially trained installation teams would typically install the shallow-pitched GRP roof within one day and provide a 40 year guarantee of virtually maintenance-free, leak-proof performance complete with integral guttering.

However, the Health & Safety aspects of the project mean that although the GRP modules are quickly installed, the proximity of the buildings to sources of extreme hazard from very high voltage, explosion, chemical and fire risk demand that the installation process be carried out within a controlled safety envelope within which the team constantly work. It is Harviglass’ ability to innovate and adapt to such issues while still providing an efficient and cost-effective solution, carried out with minimal disruption to the site, which earned the company selection for this project.
