Stalybridge Turret
When an early 19th century school building in Stalybridge, Cheshire was
to be completely refurbished as a residential home, its Grade II listing
meant that all architectural features had to be restored to their original
design.

|
Prominent on the roof of the building stood a timber and lead
turret or cupola which was in a state of complete dilapidation.
However, the planning authorities insisted it be fully restored
to its authentic appearance.
As the original skills for such work are almost impossible to
find, and the costs exorbitant, Harviglass, with their wide reputation
for solutions to difficult architectural problems, were consulted.
In a few short weeks a moulded GRP (glass-fibre reinforced plastic)
replacement was designed, manufactured and installed amid much
local publicity and civic pride as the Mayor of Tameside lowered
the finished cupola into place.

|
To allow the roof construction to go ahead unhindered prior
to the final installation, the saddle base was constructed
and installed first, providing a secure base for the light-weight
cupola but making the building water tight as construction proceeded
All materials are completely weatherproof and maintenance-free
and external colours and textures exactly simulate those of the
original lead. The complete unit was installed in less than one
hour.
