Have you ever wondered just how TV production companies find the amazing sets for the shows we all watch? Well naturally, they have a team of talented location scouts who are always on the lookout for that perfect location. However sometimes it’s just not cost-effective to shoot “on location” but better to create your location on the studio premises.
Coronation Street Props
Harviglass Fibre were approached by ITV Business Services they required new GRP walls to replace their existing ones on the long running hit TV show Coronation Street. The existing ones had been in use for years & were starting to show plenty of wear & the main issue that their props team faced was that soon filming would switch to using HD Cameras & this would show the worn condition of the original GRP walls.
How GRP Walls Work
Basically, the Coronation Street set is a row of terraced houses with a brick wall at either end. Due to the size of the back yards on the terraced houses, they couldn’t fit cast & crew in a normal size yard, so they have 3 GRP walls which slide up & down the row to create false walls where needed. We went down to site where we manufactured a mould to replicate the brick pattern of the side of ‘Dev’s Shop’ as it had the exact brick pattern they wanted to produce.
Once we had created a template we returned to our premises with the mould where we then manufactured timber frames to match the correct size of the wall before mounting the GRP Skins onto them. They were then delivered to site where they were specially painted by ITV to match the surrounding brickwork.
As a follow on to that we used the mould to produce some more skins incorporating window frames which were used to create houses in the back drop.
They were supplied as flat skins which the ITV team fixed to the scaffolding type system you see in the pictures before again applying their specialist paint for the final effect.
Our Props even featured on the popular Corrie Fan Blog Coronation Street Updates.
